Treatment Population:
The primary treatment populations I serve are children & teens, and their families. In my areas of expertise, I do work with adults. Areas of particular expertise include: Survivors and offenders of sexual abuse; Reunification in the wake of abuse and/or divorce; Disruptive Behavior disorders (ADD/ADHD, ODD, Conduct D/O); Autism Spectrum Disorders; Sexual development; and Mood disorders (anxiety and depression). Individuation/differentiation issues and their impact on parenting are often interwoven in my work with youth. Where I work with children (down to age 4) and their families, I generally do not work with pre-K or below unless the treatment foci are sexual abuse and/or touching/boundary issues.
Approach to Treatment:
I draw from a variety of treatment perspective, depending upon what appears to best address the concerns presented. My primary training is based on Systemic Therapy approaches. I also regularly utilize Cognitive Behavioral (CBT, TF-CBT), Solution Focus, Narrative, and Brief Therapy models in supporting positive changes in client’s lives; I am versant in Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT), IFS, and can support clients who have received in-patient training in these skills. I regularly recommend activities for clients to complete outside of the treatment setting as change requires practice in daily life. I also believe that it it important to coordinate with the significant players in a youth’s life when providing services to them; this may include coordinating with the Schools, Teams, Youth Groups, etc.
Specialty Areas: Sexual Abuse, Sexual Reactivity & Perpetration; Adolescents, Child and Family Therapy; PTSD; and Behavior Disorders. I am retained as an Expert Witness in cases related to these areas.
Education:
I maintain licensure from the State of Washington as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and full certification as a Sex Offender Treatment Provider; furthermore, I have earned National Board Certified Counselor and Child Mental Health Specialist distinctions. I participate in regular Continuing education to maintain my license and certifications. Noteworthy experiences include ROPES facilitator certification, Child Protective Team member since 1997, and Professional Ethics trainer from 1994-2014. Life experiences from which I draw include: parenting my own children, coaching, directing/counseling a family summer camp for Hemophilia Foundation of WA from 1981-2009, owning/operating a small business, and competing on a national level in triathlons.
